When it comes to brushing your teeth, there is actually more that you should know than simply brushing with toothpaste a couple times a day. If you aren't keeping these other things in mind, then you may be increasing your chances of cavities, stains on your teeth, bad breath, periodontal disease and more. Since these issues are problems no one wants to find themselves dealing with, it's important for you to review all the information offered here so you can spot trouble right away:

Know how to spot gum issues

When you are brushing your teeth it's a good idea for you to also take a few moments to check the condition of your teeth and gums in the mirror. This can help you spot the signs of developing issues so you can get them treated before they lead to bigger problems. Your teeth should not look darker than they always have. You should see no dark spots, holes, chips or other new changes in your teeth. Your gums should also look healthy. They should have a consistent pink coloring and not have any areas of swelling. Keep in mind, depending on your nationality, your gums may naturally darker than other peoples. Paying attention to what the inside of your mouth looks like regularly can help you spot problems.

Tooth protection starts at the gums and with a healthy oral environment in general

Aside from brushing your teeth you also want to very gently go over your gums at the same time, to remove bacteria and plaque off them as well. You also want to be sure that when you floss you work it up to the gum so all food particles are out and none are left to get caught under your gums. If you allow problems to set in the gums, then the teeth will be open to many issues which can cause everything from pain to tooth loss. You should also scrape your tongue daily to remove even more bacteria that can cause an unhealthy oral environment.

Brushing your teeth should actually be done a certain way

You should use the softest bristled toothbrush possible for your teeth and use it gently. Brush all the surfaces at differing angles and very lightly go up on your gums some. Use a good mouthwash a few minutes after your last toothbrushing of the day and don't even drink water for a bit afterward. This allows the mouthwash to keep working longer on cleaning your mouth.
